Clearing the flats

My Mother-in-Law is coming to stay with us for the weekend! Those can be scary words. In preparation, I've been busy cleaning and straightening my home. Peter Walsh puts into words another good practice for organizing, when beginning to organize or clean, clear the flat surfaces.
So while I have been getting my home ready, I have been doing just that. I make sure all of the flat surfaces that like to collect things are cleared off and their contents are put back where they belong.
Every room has a flat surface that tends to collect things. The bathroom counters, the kitchen, the dining room table, coffee table, night stand. I could go on and on. Now the trick, don't just hide things away that were on those surfaces. Those items should get put where they belong, given away or be tossed out. Clearing the flats, is a good habit to be in and makes maintenance of organized space much easier. It's amazing that once you clean that off a flat surface you feel like you just spent hours cleaning and organizing.

  1. So after reading this post, I took a look around my bedroom to see what I could do to clean up. I took your advice and cleared the flats, and was amazed at the difference it made. My mom even commented how neat my bedroom was - and I hardly had to lift a finger. Now if only I could motivate to move on to the other rooms in my house!
