Clearing the flats

My Mother-in-Law is coming to stay with us for the weekend! Those can be scary words. In preparation, I've been busy cleaning and straightening my home. Peter Walsh puts into words another good practice for organizing, when beginning to organize or clean, clear the flat surfaces.
So while I have been getting my home ready, I have been doing just that. I make sure all of the flat surfaces that like to collect things are cleared off and their contents are put back where they belong.
Every room has a flat surface that tends to collect things. The bathroom counters, the kitchen, the dining room table, coffee table, night stand. I could go on and on. Now the trick, don't just hide things away that were on those surfaces. Those items should get put where they belong, given away or be tossed out. Clearing the flats, is a good habit to be in and makes maintenance of organized space much easier. It's amazing that once you clean that off a flat surface you feel like you just spent hours cleaning and organizing.

Toys, Toys and more Toys!

Today I am reading "It's All Too Much" by Peter Walsh. It's a pretty interesting view on the over abundance of "stuff" we all have collected in our homes and lives. My favorite tip so far is dealing with toys. He suggests having two toy boxes/bins. Only two (I know, I know only two containers for toys???). When they are full that means no more. I gather the idea to be that you have to constantly evaluate and sort through what is in the bins. Also he is big on removing something when you get something new which I think is a great way to keep clutter and excess to a minimum. We are going to give the two toy bins a try.

Welcome to my new blog all about organizing for baby and home! I'm excited to share tips and tricks for solutions around your home.
